EKO HOT BLOG reports that the democrats warns that the United States is drifting toward authoritarian rule just eight months into Trump’s second term.
Their reactions followed a weekend of dramatic developments, including President Trump’s public demand for legal action against prominent Democrats and the abrupt suspension of popular late-night show host Jimmy Kimmel by ABC, reportedly under pressure from Trump allies in the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did not mince words, saying in an interview on CNN that turning the justice department into a tool for punishing enemies is “how dictatorships begin.”
He added, “This is the path to a dictatorship where people are punished not based on guilt but on political opposition.”
Another Democratic senator, Chris Murphy, went further, describing the country’s current state as being “on the verge of becoming a banana republic.”
Murphy told ABC, “The president is now wielding the full weight of the federal government from the justice department to the FCC to silence and punish his critics.
It’s a serious threat to American democracy.”
Kimmel, who had openly criticised the administration’s response to the recent shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, was taken off-air by ABC.
The move came after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, known to be aligned with the president, reportedly threatened to revoke ABC’s broadcast licenses.
“This could be one of the most dangerous moments in America’s history,” Murphy added.
“Freedom of speech and the independence of institutions are under direct attack.”
In a social media message on Saturday directed at Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump complained about the lack of charges against political figures like Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James both Democrats who have led investigations into Trump in the past.
These individuals were recently accused by Federal Housing Finance Agency chief Bill Pulte a close Trump ally of alleged mortgage fraud, though the federal prosecutor handling the case resigned last week, citing lack of evidence.
The prosecutor, Erik Siebert, stepped down on Friday, reportedly telling colleagues there was no basis to pursue charges. Trump later claimed he had dismissed Siebert.
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also weighed in, saying the actions of the Trump administration mark “a very dangerous turn” in American politics.
“This administration’s willingness to use political and legal tools to intimidate critics and manipulate public discourse is truly alarming,” she said during a CNN interview.
Republican congressman Don Bacon, who is not seeking re-election in 2026, also condemned the threats against the media.
Speaking to CNN, he said,
“Threatening broadcasters and talking about pulling licenses that’s not what this country stands for. We have press freedom and we should protect it.”
Senator Schiff and Attorney General James have both faced backlash from Trump after spearheading investigations into his past conduct actions he continues to label as politically motivated attacks.
