President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the Commonwealth to award the hosting rights of the 2030 Commonwealth Games to Nigeria, insisting that the centenary edition offers the perfect opportunity to bring the historic sporting event to Africa for the first time.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that in an appeal to the Commonwealth family on Wednesday, Tinubu noted that the Games, which began in 1930, have been staged across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania, but never on African soil in their 100-year history.

“For 100 years, the Games have never been held in Africa. The centenary edition is the right time to correct this imbalance. Awarding the Games to Nigeria will send a powerful message that every region of the Commonwealth matters, and that Africa is not just part of the story, but central to its future,” the President said.
He described Nigeria as the gateway and Africa as the stage, stressing that hosting the Games in the continent would complete the circle of Commonwealth unity. “Let us make history together in 2030. Let us complete the circle of Commonwealth unity. The dream must be realized. The time is now,” Tinubu declared.

Nigeria, which has previously hosted major international sporting events including the 2003 All Africa Games in Abuja and the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, is positioning itself as a frontrunner for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
The centenary Games are expected to be one of the most significant in the competition’s history, marking 100 years since the inaugural edition in Hamilton, Canada.
