- Pledges relief and infrastructure review
The Lagos State government has apologised to residents for recent flash floods, attributing them to illegal structures and unusually heavy rains.
According to Eko Hot Blog, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed regret over the flooding, especially in low-lying areas, and promised that his administration will step up enforcement against illegal buildings and improve drainage infrastructure.

In a statement, the government noted that while heavy rainfall played a major role, unapproved developments along waterways and blocked drainage channels significantly worsened the situation.
The administration said it will begin immediate demolition of encroachments that obstruct water flow and reinforce drainage systems in flood-prone zones.
Officials also affirmed plans to mobilize relief materials food, water, medicines for affected communities and to repair damaged roads and bridges. They urged residents to comply with regulations, avoid building on flood plains, and cooperate with enforcement teams.

Some Lagosians, particularly in areas like Ajegunle, Mushin, and parts of Lekki, have suffered property damage, loss of assets, and health risks due to stagnant floodwater. Community leaders have demanded fair compensation and faster action to prevent recurrence.
Urban planners say Lagos’s rapid growth, lax enforcement, and the increasing frequency of heavy rains perhaps linked to climate change create a perfect storm for flooding.
They stress that long-term solutions must include better land use, strict building codes, and resilient infrastructure.
As the rainy season continues, many will be watching whether the government’s promises translate into visible prevention and protection measures.
