Doctors suspect pica disorder and recommend ongoing psychiatric evaluation.
Doctors at Devnandani Hospital in Hapur, India, have successfully removed an astonishing 50 objects from the stomach of a 40-year-old man who was admitted earlier this month with severe abdominal pain.
The patient underwent scans that revealed dozens of metallic and plastic objects, including 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens lodged in his abdomen. The complex surgery, which lasted five hours, was carried out on September 17 under the leadership of Dr. Shyam Kumar.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Medical staff described the case as one of the most unusual they had ever encountered. “When we performed the ultrasound, X-ray and CT scan, we were stunned to see metallic and plastic objects inside his stomach. I have never seen so many foreign bodies in one patient,” Dr. Kumar told the Times of India.
Hospital officials revealed that the man had a history of substance abuse and had been admitted to a de-addiction centre in Ghaziabad about a month before the incident. Reports suggested he became frustrated at being kept in the facility and began swallowing household items in protest.
The patient admitted to deliberately ingesting the objects, saying, “I would pick them up and go to the washroom to swallow them.” During surgery, doctors discovered spoon heads and toothbrush bristles had been broken off before ingestion.
Experts believe the behaviour may be linked to pica disorder, a rare psychiatric condition where individuals consume non-food items. Doctors have recommended psychiatric evaluation for the patient to prevent recurrence.
The man is now recovering and remains under close medical supervision.
