For the first time in its history, the Electric Powerboat Racing Championship (E1 Series) has made a stop in Africa and Lagos, Nigeria, is the host.
The world’s top Formula 2 pilots converged on the Victoria Island lagoon from Saturday, October 4, to Sunday, October 5, transforming the city’s inland waterways into a spectacle of high-speed electric racing.

The Lagos Grand Prix marks a historic milestone not just for the sport, but for the continent since E1 Series, an all-electric international offshore powerboat championship, debuted in Jeddah in 2024. The global tour, which has visited Europe and the Middle East, will conclude in Miami, USA, later this year.
The E1 Lagos GP brought together nine celebrity-backed teams, including those supported by international icons such as LeBron James (Team AlUla), Tom Brady (Team Brady), Rafael Nadal (Team Rafa), Virat Kohli (Team Blue Rising), and Will Smith (Team Westbrook Racing).

Other teams included Team Steve Aoki, Team Miami, Team Drogba, and Team Brazil, which made history by clinching its first-ever E1 podium victory through racers Timmy Hansen and Ieva Millere-Hagin on Sunday.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who attended the opening ceremony, described the event as a defining moment for Lagos and expressed the state’s readiness to make it a permanent fixture on the global E1 calendar.

Lagos on the Global Stage
Hosting the E1 Series is more than a sporting triumph; it is a statement of Lagos’s growing capacity to stage world-class events. The city joins global destinations such as Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah — locations that combine natural beauty, urban sophistication, and strong logistical support.
For Lagos, the event demonstrates how its waterways, tourism potential, and vibrant culture can be leveraged to attract international attention. The E1 Lagos GP showcased the city’s ability to handle the complex coordination such an event demands, from maritime security to hospitality and media logistics.

It also provided a symbolic boost to Nigeria’s international reputation. In recent years, global perceptions have often focused on the country’s infrastructural and security challenges.
Yet, Lagos’s successful hosting of the E1 Championship, complete with world-class racers, celebrity team owners, and international media coverage, serves as evidence that Nigeria can deliver when given the opportunity.

Building for the Future
While Lagos’s hosting of the E1 Grand Prix is a major leap forward, it also highlights the need for sustained investment in infrastructure and event readiness. To transform this success into a blueprint for future international events, stakeholders, from government agencies to private investors, must address core issues such as transportation, power, accommodation, and environmental management.
Water-based sports in particular require long-term commitments to clean, navigable waterways and modern marinas. If Lagos can sustain such standards, it can open doors to a wide range of international competitions, festivals, and conferences.
Beyond sports, the lesson from E1 Lagos GP is clear: global recognition comes with consistent effort. With the right planning, Nigeria could position itself not just for future E1 races, but also as a candidate for global sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
