EKO HOT BLOG reports that the defection was formally announced on Tuesday during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read Chukwu’s letter of resignation from the Labour Party. The announcement was met with applause from lawmakers on the ruling party’s side.
Explaining his decision, Senator Chukwu said he left the LP due to what he described as the collapse of internal democracy and the tattered state of the party.
“I am leaving the Labour Party because internal democracy has completely collapsed, and the party is in disarray,” Chukwu stated in his letter addressed to the Senate leadership.
Elected under the Labour Party platform in 2023, Chukwu lamented that the party had failed to uphold the discipline, transparency, and democratic principles that once attracted reform-minded politicians like him.
In his reaction, Senate President Akpabio congratulated Chukwu for joining the APC, calling his decision a “bold step.”
“I congratulate Senator Kelvin Chukwu for joining the APC. Let me assure you that Nigeria will not be a one-party state because INEC will continue to register more parties,” Akpabio said.
He also urged all senators to work collectively across party lines in the interest of national progress.

Following Chukwu’s defection, the composition of the 10th Senate now stands as follows:
-
APC – 73 senators
-
PDP – 28 senators
-
Labour Party – 4 senators
-
NNPP – 1 senator
-
SDP – 1 senator
-
APGA – 2 senators
Chukwu’s exit further strengthens the APC’s majority in the upper chamber, solidifying its dominance in legislative affairs.
