The Labour Party has refuted claims that its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would withdraw from the 2027 race or step down for any political coalition or rival aspirant.
The interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Tony Akeni, made this clarification in an interview with The Punch, stating that such rumours were unfounded and misleading. According to him, withdrawing Obi from the race would destroy the hopes of millions of Nigerians yearning for change and national renewal.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Akeni said, “Forcing Peter Obi to withdraw from the race is to take away 90 per cent of the hope of Nigerians for redemption and a new beginning.”
He further called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to make a personal sacrifice by stepping aside and supporting Obi for the 2027 presidential election.
“There is no substitute for the ideology of the Labour Party. We are going head-on for the presidency if the right decision is not taken by the coalition,” he said. “Atiku should prove his love for Nigeria by doing the right thing and giving Peter Obi a chance in 2027. Let Atiku think of what is best for his legacy—whether he wants to be remembered as the man who sacrificed Nigeria for his ambition or as the man who sacrificed his ambition for Nigeria and helped it recover.”
Akeni also mentioned that a movement tagged “AGOBI’27” (Atiku Givus Obi 2027) has been initiated by stakeholders to appeal to Atiku’s conscience and encourage him to support Obi as a unifying figure for the opposition ahead of the next general election.
He emphasized that the Labour Party remains committed to its vision of good governance, transparency, and people-driven leadership, urging supporters to remain focused as political realignments continue ahead of 2027.
