A Federal High Court in Abuja has once again stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its National Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the court also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring, or recognising the outcome of the event, where new national officers were to be elected.

Justice Peter Lifu issued the order on Tuesday following a suit filed by former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido. Lamido had accused the PDP leadership of denying him the right to purchase the nomination form for the national chairmanship position, effectively excluding him from contesting.

In his ruling, Justice Lifu faulted the party’s failure to comply with established procedures and legal requirements for conducting conventions. He noted that Lamido’s evidence showed that the timetable and notice for the convention were not properly published as required by law.
The judge stated that the “balance of convenience” favoured Lamido, adding that he would suffer greater harm if the convention went ahead without allowing him to participate.
He emphasised that due process must always be followed in political and constitutional matters, warning that any deviation from the law could undermine democracy.

Justice Lifu further reaffirmed the court’s constitutional duty to uphold justice, stressing that the judiciary must not shy away from its responsibility “without fear or favour.”
In his final ruling, he restrained the PDP from holding the convention in Ibadan or anywhere else. He prohibited INEC from recognising any outcome of such an event if it were held.
