Represented by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the President said the remodelled City Gate is more than an entry point into the Federal Capital Territory, describing it as an architectural landmark designed to rival iconic gateways in major cities around the world.
He noted that the monument features an elegant design and a Unity Fountain with 37 water nozzles representing the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, symbolising national unity, diversity and shared aspirations.
“This newly remodelled Abuja City Gate, with its beautiful water fountain representing the 36 states and the FCT, tells every visitor and Nigerian arriving from the airport that they have entered a city built on unity, diversity and shared aspirations,” Tinubu said.
The President commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, for driving the project to completion, describing him as a key figure in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“When you share a vision with a man of action, you see results. Minister Wike, you have proven once again to be a true driver of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he added.
Tinubu also urged residents of the FCT to protect and maintain public infrastructure, stressing that safeguarding government assets is a collective responsibility.

Speaking at the event, Wike disclosed that the remodelling project was inspired by a challenge from the First Lady, who called for an upgrade of the iconic structure to reflect the status of Nigeria’s capital city.
He said the project, awarded in November 2025, was completed within record time with the support of President Tinubu.
“The First Lady challenged us to ensure the gate befits a nation’s capital. Today, with the support of Mr. President, the FCDA and Julius Berger, we have delivered a world-class monument,” Wike said.
The minister added that the upgraded facility includes car parks, food courts and recreational spaces, while arrangements have been concluded for its professional maintenance.
Also speaking, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as a visible expression of a new era of infrastructural renewal aimed at repositioning Abuja to global standards.
The Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, said the Abuja City Gate, originally constructed in 1991 to mark the relocation of Nigeria’s capital from Lagos to Abuja, had suffered years of neglect before its rehabilitation commenced in November 2025.
He explained that the remodelled facility now features a Unity Fountain with 37 nozzles, an advanced irrigation system, enhanced illumination, a 60-vehicle capacity car park, toilet facilities and improved security infrastructure.
