The British Broadcasting Corporation has issued a public apology to United States President Donald Trump after admitting that a 2024 Panorama broadcast featured an edited version of his speech that created a wrong impression. The corporation described the move as an error of judgment but firmly rejected Trump’s demand for financial compensation.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that President Trump had earlier threatened a one billion dollar lawsuit, insisting the edited segment was false, defamatory, malicious, and inflammatory. The backlash eventually contributed to the resignation of former BBC Director General Tim Davie and News Chief Executive Deborah Turness.
The apology appeared in the BBC’s Corrections and Clarifications section on Thursday evening, where the organisation acknowledged that the programme was reviewed following widespread criticism. BBC Chairman Samir Shah said the broadcast gave the impression of a direct call for violent action, stressing that the corporation regretted the mistake and was offering an unreserved apology to Trump.
In its clarification, the BBC explained that the sequence used excerpts taken from different parts of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech. The corporation admitted that the editing mistakenly suggested it was a single continuous clip, which created a misleading narrative about the president’s remarks. The broadcaster added that the programme would not be rebroadcast in its current form.

Despite the apology, the BBC dismissed Trump’s defamation claim, maintaining that while it accepted the editing was inappropriate, there was no valid legal basis for a defamation lawsuit.
