Sources said members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers who sell tickets in the Arakale area allegedly attacked the officer while he was on duty, using an object believed to be a charm.
The inspector collapsed and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.
Providing details on the incident, DSP Ayanlade said it occurred in the early hours of Wednesday while the officer was performing his lawful duty.

“An altercation occurred between the officer and some recalcitrant individuals. During the confrontation, the officer was stabbed, which led to an immediate and coordinated police response,” he said.
He added that the Commissioner of Police deployed operatives to the scene right away, leading to the arrest of the two suspects.
“The follow up operation carried out last night is part of the Command’s ongoing efforts to remove violent criminal elements from the state and prevent further threats to public safety,” Ayanlade stated.
The PPRO stressed that the Command does not condone human rights abuses by its officers and will also deal firmly with anyone who assaults police personnel carrying out their duties. He noted that the suspects will be charged to court once investigations are completed.
Ayanlade also warned the public against spreading unverified information that could cause panic or divert essential security resources.
