The Lagos State Government has announced major plans to upgrade waterfront infrastructure as part of efforts to strengthen tourism, transportation, and environmental sustainability across the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Honourable Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush Alebiosu, disclosed the plans during a panel session at the Tourism and Hospitality Stakeholders Engagement Summit held at the Lagos Continental Hotel.

The summit, themed “Unlocking the Potentials & Opportunities of Lagos Tourism: Collaboration and Partnership for a Greater Lagos,” brought together industry leaders and government officials.
Alebiosu revealed that Lagos has fully transitioned from wooden jetties to modern concrete pontoons, a development he described as a significant step toward global best practices. He noted that the upgrade will enhance safety, expand operational capacity, and boost water transportation services statewide.
The Commissioner further announced that the State Government is formulating strict policies to address illegal and unplanned land reclamations along the coastline. Such unregulated activities, he warned, threaten the environment and the long-term sustainability of coastal development.
He added that Lagos aims to sanitise ongoing illegal reclamation activities while promoting iconic, world-class models similar to Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah and Singapore’s Marina Bay.

Alebiosu also revealed that plans have commenced for the full rehabilitation of existing jetties across the state. The initiative is designed to improve safety, enhance user experience, and support the tourism and hospitality sector.
Reiterating the administration’s broader goal for the sector, the Commissioner said: “All hands are currently on deck to ensure that Lagos State becomes one of the top 10 tourism destination hubs in the world, and the signs are there for everyone to see that it’s fast becoming a reality.”
