The White House explained that Nigeria was added to the list due to concerns about security challenges, including the activities of extremist groups and difficulties associated with screening and vetting processes.

According to the document, Nigeria recorded notable visa overstay rates across both visitor and student visa categories, a factor cited in the decision to impose partial restrictions.
The proclamation retains full entry bans on several previously listed countries, while expanding restrictions to additional nations across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

However, the White House clarified that exemptions remain in place for lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, diplomats, athletes and individuals whose entry serves U.S. national interests.
President Trump was quoted as saying the action was necessary to ensure that individuals entering the United States do not pose security risks, adding that the policy aligns with his administration’s broader border and immigration agenda.
