President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Mulisiu Oseni as Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), following the Senate’s confirmation of members of the reconstituted board.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the development effectively replaces Abdullahi Ramat, whose earlier nomination for the position had stalled at the National Assembly amid widespread objections.

Ramat, a former chairman of Ungogo Local Government Area in Kano State, was initially nominated in August after the exit of the commission’s former chairman, Sanusi Garba. However, his nomination attracted intense controversy.

The nominee had drawn public attention after reportedly attempting to assume office at NERC headquarters in Abuja before Senate confirmation, an action that sparked criticism from industry stakeholders and lawmakers.
Following multiple petitions and public complaints, the Senate Committee on Power declined to proceed with his confirmation, dismissing claims that lawmakers were influenced by financial inducements.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Presidency confirmed Oseni’s appointment, noting that he had been serving as Vice Chairman and later Acting Chairman of the commission.

According to the statement, Oseni’s tenure as chairman took effect from December 1, 2025, and will run until the completion of his statutory 10-year term, in line with the Electricity Act, 2023.
President Tinubu also approved the appointment of Dr. Yusuf Ali as Vice Chairman of the commission, while retaining other commissioners serving first and second terms.
The President charged the new board to accelerate reforms in the power sector and ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the Electricity Act.
