Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has granted a pardon to Sunday Jackson, a death row inmate convicted for killing a herdsman, in an act of clemency to mark the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Jackson, an Adamawa farmer, had been widely perceived as having been unjustly sentenced, with many describing the killing as an act of self defence. His case had attracted widespread public calls for intervention. He was held at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre.

The pardon, announced in a statement on Tuesday in Yola by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, also extended to Joseph Eugene of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Yola, and Maxwell Ibrahim of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kaduna.

In addition, the governor ordered the full remission of the remaining jail terms of five other inmates. They are Joshua James Audo, Adamu Ibrahim, Mohammed Abubakar, Ibrahim Usman and Saidu Abubakar, serving at the Medium Security Custodial Centres in Numan and Jada.
According to the statement, the gesture followed recommendations by the Adamawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and was granted to inmates who had shown significant improvement in behaviour and conduct.
Governor Fintiri said the action was in line with his constitutional powers and aimed at giving deserving inmates a second chance.
