The explosion, which occurred at about 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday, reportedly went off during congregational prayers, when traders and residents had gathered to worship before heading home.
Although official details remain limited, eyewitnesses said the device was suspected to be an improvised explosive planted by Boko Haram insurgents.
A resident, Muhammad Abdullahi, said the blast happened in the middle of prayers, causing chaos and panic in the busy market area.
Another witness, Bukar Wakil, explained that the explosion triggered fire and thick smoke, damaging parts of the mosque’s ceiling and forcing worshippers and traders to flee in fear.

The incident heightened tension in Maiduguri, particularly among residents preparing for the 2025 Christmas celebrations, amid renewed concerns over security in the state.
In a statement signed by Stanley Nwokeocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communication, the Vice President assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is deploying additional tactical teams to track down and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Shettima reaffirmed the government’s resolve to defeat terrorism, noting that security agencies would continue to receive all necessary resources to confront insurgency and protect lives and property.
He added that the Federal Government is working closely with the Borno State government and local security agencies to strengthen the protection of vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure across the North East and other parts of the country.
