King Charles III of the United Kingdom has conferred the prestigious Grand Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) on Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, in acknowledgement of his outstanding service and contributions.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the honour places Edun among a very select group of Nigerians to receive the royal distinction, making him the first recipient since former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, was similarly recognised several years ago.

The rare award highlights the significance of Edun’s contributions to international and Commonwealth-related engagements, particularly his long-standing involvement in youth development initiatives and his commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme.

Beyond the prestige, the recognition further reinforces Edun’s distinguished career spanning public service, finance, and international development, while evoking memories of the rare honour earlier bestowed on Anyaoku during his leadership of the Commonwealth.
A citation published in the official gazette stated: “Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood, St. James’s Palace, London SW1, 30 December 2025. The King has been graciously pleased to appoint Adebayo Olawale Edun, lately Trustee, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, as an Honorary Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.).”
Reacting to the development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated the minister, describing the honour as well-deserved and exceptional. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Edun’s dedication and international impact.

According to the statement, the royal recognition was granted in appreciation of Edun’s years of service with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, a global youth empowerment programme that equips young people with leadership skills, discipline, and character.
President Tinubu noted that the initiative continues to positively impact thousands of young Nigerians and aligns with his administration’s focus on youth empowerment and national renewal.
He commended Edun as a key member of his cabinet and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to nurturing young Nigerians as future leaders, adding that the honour reflects the value placed on service, excellence, and global collaboration.
