-
Simple habits prevent most home and workplace fire deaths.
-
Knowing exits and staying calm saves lives.
Fire does not announce itself. It starts quietly, spreads fast and often leaves little time to think. Across homes, offices and markets, many fire deaths happen not because help was unavailable, but because people did not know what to do in those first critical minutes.

These seven fire safety tips are simple, practical and capable of saving your life.
1. Know your exits before an emergency happens
Always be aware of at least two ways out of any building you use regularly. At home, make sure doors, windows and corridors are not blocked. In offices and public places, take note of staircases and emergency exits. When smoke fills a room, familiarity can mean escape.
2. Never ignore electrical warning signs
Loose sockets, sparking plugs, overheating chargers and frequent power trips are fire warnings. Do not manage them. Replace damaged wiring and avoid overloading extension boxes. Most residential fires start from preventable electrical faults.
3. Keep fire extinguishers and know how to use them
Having a fire extinguisher is useless if no one knows how it works. Learn the basic steps. Pull the pin, aim at the base of the fire, squeeze the handle and sweep side to side. Extinguishers are for small fires only. If the fire grows, leave immediately.
4. Do not fight smoke. Stay low and move fast
Smoke kills faster than flames. If a fire breaks out, crawl close to the floor where the air is cleaner. Cover your nose and mouth with cloth if possible and never run blindly into thick smoke.
5. Turn off gas and fuel sources when not in use
Gas leaks are silent killers. Always turn off cylinders, stoves and fuel powered equipment after use. If you smell gas, do not switch on lights or appliances. Open windows and leave the area immediately.
6. Practice fire drills, even at home
Fire drills are not only for schools. Families should agree on an escape plan and a safe meeting point outside. Practice helps children and adults react calmly instead of panicking during real emergencies.
7. Do not go back inside for anything
Once you escape, stay out. Many fire deaths happen when people re enter burning buildings to save property. Your life is worth more than documents, phones or money.
Fire safety is not fear. It is preparation. The few minutes you spend learning and applying these tips can make the difference between survival and tragedy.
