The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) closed trading on Friday, January 9, 2026, on a strong note, recording its biggest single-day increase in market capitalisation after a rally in several key stocks added N953 billion to investors’ wealth.

By the end of the session, total market capitalisation had risen by 0.93 percent, climbing from N102.822 trillion at the opening of trade to N103.775 trillion at the close.
The All-Share Index mirrored the positive performance, gaining 1,491.52 points, or 0.93 percent, to settle at 162,298.08, compared with 160,806.56 in the previous trading day.
Market breadth was positive, as 48 stocks closed in the green against 28 losers, reflecting broad-based buying interest across sectors.

Industrial and Medical Gases, SCOA Nigeria, McNicholas, May and Baker, and FTN Cocoa Processors topped the gainers’ chart, while Aluminium Extrusion Industries led the decliners, falling by 9.91 percent to close at N19.10. Austinlaz, Sovereign Trust Insurance, and Prestige Assurance also ended the session lower.
Trading activity remained robust, with 624.1 million shares exchanged in 43,816 deals, valued at N18.5 billion. This compared with 645.1 million shares worth N16.4 billion traded in the previous session, underscoring sustained investor participation in the market.
