EKO HOT BLOG reports that highlighting public health benefits, Bird explained that cleaner, low-sulphur fuels replace the inferior products long circulated in West Africa. He revealed production and distribution milestones, stating that the refinery now handles 1,000 trucks daily and 500 million litres of fuel per day. The stable supply and relatively lower prices, he added, are already supporting economic stability and strengthening the naira.
Bird also discussed expansion plans, including raising polypropylene production to 2.4 million tonnes, strengthening domestic manufacturing, and creating an industrial ecosystem. He dismissed claims that the current petrol price of ₦739 per litre is anti-competitive, describing it as fully market-driven.
He stressed that local refining reduces Nigeria’s exposure to global oil shocks and ensures fuel market stability. “Nigeria is now enjoying world-class fuel. We have the capacity, and we must make sure our production matches European quality,” he said. Bird described the refinery as a continental project aimed at driving price stability and long-term energy security.

On petrochemicals, Bird revealed plans to diversify into detergents, base oils, lubricants, and LPG, while the crude-for-naira programme currently supplies 30–40 per cent of refinery crude. He reaffirmed that sustained local refining is vital to Nigeria’s energy future.
