Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs, has called for greater clarity and accuracy in the use of diplomatic language, stressing that proper understanding of diplomatic terms is essential to strengthening Nigeria’s foreign relations and public conversations on international affairs.
Speaking on Tuesday at the National Defence College in Abuja, Eko Hot Blog reports that Enikanolaiye observed that diplomatic expressions are often wrongly used in the media and public discussions, a trend he said frequently distorts Nigeria’s established foreign policy practices.

The former Permanent Secretary noted that such errors not only create confusion but also risk misrepresenting Nigeria’s international engagements. He said that clearer explanations of diplomatic concepts would help journalists, analysts, and the general public better understand the workings of diplomacy.

While diplomacy follows globally accepted standards, Enikanolaiye explained that each country also operates within its own customs and traditions, which must be respected in interstate relations. He warned that ignoring these conventions could offend other nations and unnecessarily strain diplomatic ties.
According to him, Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements are anchored on international conventions, the Foreign Service Regulations, and official guidelines issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He added that careful use of language and strict observance of protocol remain critical to successful international relations.
Enikanolaiye further lamented the frequent misuse of terms such as diplomatic immunity, as well as the confusion between career diplomats and political appointees, describing the situation as a gap that needs urgent attention.

He clarified that an embassy refers to the diplomatic mission itself, while the building housing it is known as the chancery. He also explained that High Commissions are used between Commonwealth countries, while Consulates-General operate as subordinate missions, usually outside capital cities.
The presidential aide added that an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary is a diplomat fully empowered to represent the country’s Head of State abroad, stressing that correct terminology is vital to national image, effective governance, and smooth diplomatic relations.
