In a statement issued on Friday, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the incident occurred on November 16, 2023, at Orile-Iganmu, Lagos. The deceased officer, Deputy Chief Road Marshal Assistant Ajomale, was on duty when a container-laden truck, driven by Onyekachi at excessive speed, rammed into a stationary mini truck that had been flagged down for inspection.

Mohammed explained that investigations revealed the driver failed to exercise due care, leading to a collision the court described as reckless, negligent, and unlawful. The court dismissed any claim that the incident was an accident and subsequently convicted the driver of involuntary manslaughter under the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, sentencing him to life imprisonment.
The FRSC boss said the judgment sends a strong warning to motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, that dangerous driving and negligence will attract severe legal consequences.
He reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to seeking justice for fallen officers and innocent road users, adding that the FRSC would intensify enforcement, support prosecutions, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to curb reckless driving nationwide.
