Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has criticised the United States for creating a funding gap at the United Nations following its withdrawal from certain UN agencies.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a statement posted on his official X account on Monday, Sani said the move has led to job losses among UN staff and imposed constraints on the global body’s operations.

“The over-dependence of the UN on American money is a serious mistake that should now be corrected,” Sani wrote. “The oil-rich Gulf states, Europe and China have no reason not to fill the gap. America doesn’t have a bigger stake in world peace and prosperity than other rich nations.”

He warned that the UN is being sidelined on global matters and risks sliding into “complete irrelevance.” Sani added:
“It is supposed to save the world, but now it needs to be saved.”
The former lawmaker’s comments underline concerns about the UN’s financial stability and the responsibility of wealthy nations to support global peace and development initiatives.
