Speaking during the inspection, the Federal Controller of Works in Bauchi State, Engr. Bashiru Adamu, explained that the project became necessary due to the extensive deterioration of the existing single carriageway, which had developed severe potholes, cracks, surface depressions and eroded shoulders over time.
He disclosed that the rehabilitation contract was awarded on April 4, 2024, and noted that significant progress has since been recorded. According to him, 21.8 kilometres of binder course have been completed, while 11.87 kilometres have already reached the wearing course stage.
Engr. Adamu stated that the road, originally constructed in the early 1990s, had become unsafe and time-consuming for motorists. He said the ongoing works would drastically reduce travel time between Bauchi and Alkaleri, while stimulating economic activities in surrounding communities upon completion.
He added that the rehabilitation and widening works have already improved traffic flow, reduced road accidents and enhanced safety through the installation of effective drainage systems and erosion control structures.

The site project manager, Mr Joseph Samaha, commended the Federal Government for its support and assured that the project would be completed on schedule by July. He explained that the current phase covers kilometres zero to 22, adding that about 80 per cent of the work would be completed by next week, while the remaining 13 kilometres extend towards Bauchi town.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi Council, Comrade Umar Sa’idu, praised the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and pledged the union’s continued monitoring of the project.
Residents and road users along the corridor expressed satisfaction with the rehabilitation, noting that it has significantly reduced accidents and criminal activities, improved ease of movement, lowered fuel consumption and cut transportation costs.
