The Federal Ministry of Works has announced a six-week partial closure of sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to allow for urgent repairs on damaged expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge and Arepo-Punch Bridge.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the ministry said the partial closure became necessary to resume rehabilitation work earlier suspended on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge after persistent complaints from motorists over heavy traffic congestion in the area.

Speaking to journalists at the Kara Bridge on Friday, the Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, apologised to road users for the inconvenience and appealed for patience.
Komolafe explained that the expansion joints on the three bridges had deteriorated significantly, posing serious safety risks and contributing to several traffic accidents along the corridor. He said the Minister of Works, David Umahi, had therefore ordered immediate repairs to prevent further incidents.
He assured motorists that enhanced traffic management measures would be put in place throughout the repair period to ease movement and ensure the safety of road users and construction workers.
Also speaking, the contractor handling the project, Andy Duan, General Manager of CBC Construction Company, said repairs on the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro and Arepo-Punch bridges had already been completed, with work now shifting to the Ibadan-bound sections.

According to him, half of the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge has also been completed, while work will now continue on the remaining portion. Duan noted that the poor condition of the expansion joints at Kara Bridge had been a major cause of traffic accidents.
He added that construction equipment would be mobilised over the weekend, with full repair work commencing on Monday. Each bridge, he said, would be handled in phases, with half of each expansion joint expected to be completed within a week.
Duan assured that safety remained a top priority, noting that warning signs, barriers and lighting would be installed throughout the construction period.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kehinde Hamzat, urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and obey road signs during the repair period.
He warned that driving against traffic would not be tolerated and offenders would be sanctioned, stressing that the repairs were necessary to fix failing expansion joints that had created dangerous ditches and increased the risk of accidents, especially on Kara Bridge.
