The Council Hall of Lekki Local Council Development Area was filled with urgency and resolve on February 23, 2026, as the Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Department (WAPA) organized a Public Sensitization and Awareness Programme on Violence Against Women and Young Girls.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the initiative, held under the directive of the Executive Chairman, Engr. Rasaki Bamidele Kasali (MNSE, MNATE), was themed “Speak Up. Stand Up. End Violence. Protecting Women and Girls is Everyone’s Responsibility.”
The programme served as a call to action, emphasizing that silence in the face of abuse only emboldens perpetrators and prolongs suffering.
Leading the session, Dr. Bukola Lawal, a counselling psychologist, engaged participants in interactive discussions on the various forms of violence, including physical, emotional, and psychological abuse.
She highlighted warning signs often overlooked and stressed the long-term emotional and mental impact such experiences can have on victims.
Dr. Lawal encouraged victims and witnesses alike to speak out and seek help through appropriate and safe channels, noting that early intervention can prevent further harm and restore dignity to survivors.
Participants, including community members and stakeholders, agreed that beyond awareness campaigns, sustained action, community vigilance, and institutional support are crucial to effectively combating violence against women and girls.
The programme reaffirmed Lekki LCDA’s commitment to promoting safety, dignity, and equal protection for women and young girls within the community.
