EKO HOT BLOG reports that United, despite having a numerical advantage, were unable to break down the hosts and suffered a frustrating setback that left Carrick visibly disappointed.
“We are bitterly disappointed,” Carrick said. “It hurts. We came here in good shape. The way it panned out is very disappointing. There is no two ways about that.”
The defeat ended a strong start to Carrick’s tenure at Old Trafford, which saw six wins and one draw in his first seven matches following Ruben Amorim’s departure.
However, recent performances have raised concerns. United required a stoppage-time goal from Benjamin Sesko to secure a draw against West Ham and relied on Sesko again for a narrow win at Everton. Their comeback over Crystal Palace was aided by a penalty and a red card that shifted the game.
Injuries also hampered the squad, with Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui, and Patrick Dorgu unavailable against Newcastle. Casemiro and Luke Shaw were substituted after showing fatigue.
The decisive goal came from Newcastle’s William Osula, who beat Tyrell Malacia before scoring.
Despite the loss, United remain third in the Premier League and in contention for UEFA Champions League qualification.
Carrick stressed the importance of learning from the setback ahead of their next fixture against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 15 March.

Injuries and missed opportunities contributed to the disappointing United performance.
“We need to learn from this. There is no sense in not learning lessons and understanding how tonight happened. We’ve got to be positive going into the next game because there is a lot to play for,” he added.
