EKO HOT BLOG reports that Arsenal fell behind in the first half at St Mary’s Stadium following a goal from Ross Stewart, before substitute Viktor Gyokeres drew them level after the break. However, Shea Charles struck late in the 85th minute to seal a famous victory for the second-tier side.
Arteta’s team struggled throughout the contest, particularly in the absence of key players Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, while defender Gabriel Magalhaes was forced off with a knee injury.
The Arsenal manager expressed frustration over his team’s defensive lapses, admitting their performance fell below expectations.
“We conceded the first goal in a very unusual way for us, the second one was from direct play as well,” Arteta said.
“We didn’t manage the long balls well enough. We just let the ball through us. Difficult to explain but credit to them.
“We had so much dominance in and around the box. We had two massive chances and needed to capitalise on that. But if you make defending errors we made today it’s very difficult to be in the semi-final.”
The defeat ended Arsenal’s hopes of winning the FA Cup for the first time since 2020 and further dented their ambitions after losing the League Cup final to Manchester City.
Despite back-to-back defeats, Arteta urged his players to stay focused as they prepare for a crucial UEFA Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon.
“You have to adapt to the wind, the injuries. You have to adapt to difficult situations in the season. Now we have to show what we are made of,” he said.
Southampton manager Tonda Eckert praised his side’s resilience after the upset victory, which secured their first FA Cup semi-final appearance since 2021.

“We put on a good shift today. It was a challenge, we knew it was going to be a tough game. The second half always has the chance to shift and we reacted quite well,” Eckert said.
