EKO HOT BLOG reports that their connection dates back to 1997 at Barcelona, where a young Arteta joined the academy and encountered Guardiola, then the club captain. Although their time together as teammates was brief, the relationship developed into a lasting friendship and later a professional partnership.
That partnership strengthened when Arteta joined Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City, playing a key role as assistant manager. However, the dynamic shifted in 2019 when Arteta left to become Arsenal manager, leading to a period of limited contact between both men.
The relationship reportedly improved last year, with both managers reconnecting privately, although neither has disclosed how communication resumed.
Now rivals at the highest level, Guardiola and Arteta find themselves competing for major honours while navigating the pressures that come with elite football management.
The fixture, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, has drawn significant attention from football analysts and scouts.
Liverpool born scout Andy Mangan, who is set to work with the Brazil national team this summer, reflected on Guardiola’s influence.
“At first I didn’t understand what he was doing,” Mangan told the BBC. “But every week he would identify a space to attack, and every Sunday you watched those players play with joy. We were kids but it was inadvertently a vital learning period of so many coaches’ lives.”
Former Barcelona director of football, Pep Segura, also highlighted Guardiola’s tactical impact on modern football.

“Of the four phases of the game, attack, defence, offensive transition, and defensive transition, until Pep arrived, most teams structured themselves defensively and took whatever the game gave them. They were reactive. Guardiola arrived and said, ‘No, we will think about how we play from the way we attack’.”
Guardiola’s philosophy of possession, positioning, and numerical superiority has since reshaped the game, with opponents adapting through high pressing and quicker transitions.
