Governor of Babagana Zulum has commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving N68 billion to support the operations of the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP), describing the move as a major boost for the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the power project was introduced in 2021 as an emergency intervention after insurgents destroyed key electricity infrastructure, plunging Borno into a prolonged blackout that lasted nearly two years.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Dauda Iliya, Zulum said the Federal Government’s decision to provide monthly operational funding of N2 billion from March 2026 to December 2028 would help close existing financial gaps and sustain the plant’s operations.

He noted that the intervention, implemented through Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, has already restored electricity to Maiduguri and surrounding areas, leading to a revival of businesses and improvement in residents’ standard of living.
According to the governor, the steady power supply has also contributed to addressing security concerns by boosting economic activities and reducing vulnerabilities linked to insurgency.
Zulum added that the facility, which was upgraded to a 50-megawatt capacity in December 2023, has played a key role in job creation and supporting small and medium-scale enterprises across the state.

He stressed that the newly approved funding would guarantee uninterrupted electricity in Maiduguri and nearby communities, further strengthening resilience and development.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to continue working closely with the Federal Government to ensure long-term stability in the energy sector while promoting peace and economic growth in Borno State.
