Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Villa just before half-time before Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk restored parity early in the second half.

However, Villa regained control through a brace from Ollie Watkins and a curling strike by John McGinn. Van Dijk grabbed another late header, but it only served as consolation.
Speaking after the game, Slot admitted the defeat leaves Liverpool under pressure heading into the final round of the season.
He said the team now knows victory in their last match is essential if they are to finish the campaign on their own terms, adding that failing to secure even a draw at Villa Park was a costly setback.

The Dutch coach also expressed frustration over Liverpool’s recurring defensive issues, especially from set-pieces, which he believes have repeatedly hurt the team against top opposition this season.
According to Slot, Liverpool have struggled in similar fashion against clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea, making it difficult to compete in tightly contested matches.
He pointed to the manner of Villa’s second goal as particularly disappointing, while also defending midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai after his costly mistake contributed to the setback.
Despite the defeat, Slot insisted there are reasons for optimism ahead of next season. He highlighted Liverpool’s injury crisis, revealing that as many as nine players who could normally start matches were unavailable.

The manager said improvements in the transfer window, combined with better adaptation from newer players adjusting to Premier League football, could significantly strengthen the squad moving forward.
Slot also confirmed there is hope striker Alexander Isak could return for Liverpool’s final league game against Brentford next week.
He explained that Isak has faced a difficult season after missing pre-season and later suffering a broken leg, which has complicated his recovery process.
Slot added that the striker is expected to resume training during the week, although no guarantees have been made over his availability.
