The United States justice system has handed a maximum life imprisonment sentence to a Nigerian-born Catholic clergyman, Anthony Odiong, following a high-profile sexual assault trial in the state of Texas.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the 57-year-old priest was convicted by a state jury in Waco on Tuesday after overwhelming evidence and testimony exposed how he routinely used his ecclesiastical position to force sexual relationships on his congregants.

Witnesses and victims during the legal proceedings outlined a dark pattern of sexually inappropriate and predatory behaviour that the cleric successfully carried out for more than a decade within the local Catholic community.
Odiong entered his two-day sentencing hearing fully aware that the judicial guidelines for a first-degree felony sexual assault conviction carried a heavy penalty range stretching from five to 99 years, or a flat life sentence.
In addition to the primary first-degree conviction, the state jury also found the defendant guilty on two separate counts of second-degree sexual assault, slapping him with an additional 20 years of imprisonment for each of those secondary offenses.
The court ruled that all the jail terms will run concurrently, meaning the disgraced cleric will only become eligible to apply for parole after serving a mandatory 30 years behind bars.
Furthermore, the panel of jurors slapped the priest with a punitive fine of $10,000 for each of the three criminal charges, bringing his total state financial penalty to $30,000.

The comprehensive four-day criminal trial concluded with the jury determining that Odiong systematically crossed ethical boundaries by exploiting his spiritual influence to manipulate two deeply devout female parishioners into sexual acts, either directly or through an intermediary proxy.
Before his legal downfall, the convict had maintained an extensive career within the American Catholic ministry spanning nearly 17 years since his arrival in 2006.
His pastoral timeline included early ministerial assignments in the city of Waco before he ultimately transitioned to serve as the lead pastor of a Catholic parish located in Luling, a prominent suburban community outside New Orleans, Louisiana.
Following the reading of the final verdict, Odiong’s lead defense attorney, Gerald Villarial, publicly stated that his legal team does not agree with the judicial outcome and will be filing an official appeal to challenge the conviction.
