On arrival in Ethiopia, the Nigerian officials were received by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and the country’s Chief of Protocol.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu confirmed that the signing of the agreement would take place within the week, explaining that the deal is aimed at enabling eligible Nigerian prisoners to complete their sentences back home.

She also disclosed that the negotiation process, which involved legal and diplomatic engagements over time, recorded the death of four Nigerian inmates before its conclusion. She expressed concern over the incident, stressing the need to fast-track processes to prevent further loss of lives.
In a post shared on her X handle, she identified Kaliti Prison and Aba Samuel Prison as some of the facilities where Nigerians affected by the arrangement are being held.
The minister described the development as a product of strong bilateral relations between Nigeria and Ethiopia, anchored on humanitarian concerns and mutual cooperation in justice matters.

She reiterated that while the federal government continues to encourage Nigerians abroad to respect the laws of their host countries, it remains committed to ensuring that citizens facing legal issues outside the country are treated fairly under established international frameworks.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu further noted that the protection and welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora remain a priority of the Tinubu administration, while also appreciating the Ethiopian government for its cooperation in bringing the agreement to completion.
