The Sokoto State Government has approved N1 billion for its 2026 Ramadan feeding programme, which aims to provide 34,000 meals daily to vulnerable residents across the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Governor Ahmed Aliyu officially launched the initiative on Sunday at the History Bureau in Sokoto, describing it as a key social intervention designed to ease the burden on fasting Muslims and foster compassion, unity, and community support during the holy month.

“The number of feeding centres has increased from 155 to 170 following public demand, with each centre serving about 200 beneficiaries at a time,” the governor said. “Meals will be hygienic, well-packaged, and of high quality. Ad hoc staff have been engaged to ensure smooth operations throughout Ramadan.”

Aliyu highlighted that the programme is part of broader efforts by his administration to promote Islamic values and social welfare, which also include the rehabilitation of mosques and schools, as well as monthly allowances for Jumu’ah mosques.
He encouraged religious bodies, philanthropists, and the public to support the less privileged, emphasising collective responsibility to ensure no one goes hungry during Ramadan.
The governor noted that the programme, first launched 19 years ago under former Governor Aliyu Wamakko, has consistently provided relief to thousands of residents, reflecting the state’s ongoing commitment to poverty alleviation.

Aliyu Attahiru, Chairman of the Ramadan Feeding Committee, assured that all logistics were in place to guarantee transparency and effective service delivery. The Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Jabir Maihulla, urged committee members to carry out their duties with sincerity, discipline, and fear of Allah.
Representing the Sultan of Sokoto, Malam Yahaya Na Malam Boyi praised the governor’s dedication to social welfare and assured him of royal support and prayers.
The launch was attended by top government officials, lawmakers, traditional rulers, Islamic scholars, and community leaders, and included the distribution of food items to designated centres, marking the official start of the 2026 Ramadan feeding programme.
