The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has said government alone cannot successfully tackle insecurity in Nigeria, urging citizens to play active roles in promoting peace and supporting security efforts.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Obasa made the call on Wednesday at the 17th Annual Hijrah Lecture and Du’a held at the Assembly Complex in Lagos. The event was themed, “Sacred Covenant of Citizenship: Islam, Security and Our Duty to the Nigerian State.”

The Speaker described insecurity as one of the country’s major challenges, stressing that sectors such as education, healthcare, commerce and religious activities can only thrive in an atmosphere where lives and property are adequately protected.
He urged Nigerians to view citizenship as a sacred responsibility that requires active participation in fostering unity, peace and national security.
“Security is one of the greatest blessings of Allah. Without it, worship is disrupted, commerce collapses, and education suffers. But security is not the government’s duty alone. It is a shared responsibility. Citizens must report crimes, resist corruption and promote justice.

“Leaders must govern with fairness, transparency and compassion. Together, we form the covenant of citizenship,” Obasa said.
Also speaking at the event, Air Commodore (Imam) Lukman Abiodun Lawal supported the Speaker’s position, noting that insecurity cannot be addressed by government efforts alone.
Lawal advised human rights activists to pursue their advocacy with wisdom and urged media organisations to avoid sensational reporting that could embolden criminal elements.
The annual Hijrah lecture attracted religious leaders, lawmakers, government officials and members of the public, who reflected on the role of citizens in promoting national peace and stability.
