Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, the National Project Coordinator of the Special Programmes Operations and Implementation Unit (SPOIU) in the Office of the Minister of Education, Adebayo Onigbanjo, described the initiative as a major milestone under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
According to him, the Ministry of Education, under the leadership of Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, has continued to implement reforms designed to strengthen governance, improve service delivery and build an education system driven by reliable data and evidence-based decision-making.
Onigbanjo noted that Nigeria’s education sector has long struggled with fragmented databases, inconsistent reporting systems and poor access to accurate information, challenges that have hindered effective planning and accountability.
To address these issues, he said the Federal Government established the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) as a framework to harmonise and standardise education data nationwide.

He explained that DNEMIS, the flagship component of NEDI, will integrate education data into a single digital platform capable of generating timely and reliable information for planning, budgeting, policymaking, monitoring and service delivery.
According to him, every learner, school, teacher and education investment will be captured in a unified national database, enabling government and stakeholders to make informed decisions.
“You cannot improve what you cannot measure,” Onigbanjo said, adding that education data has become the foundation for sustainable education reforms.
Also speaking, the Minister’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications and E-Learning, Mojoyin Adebajo, described DNEMIS as a landmark innovation that will transform education data generation and management across the country.
She said the platform, built on the globally recognised District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2), will digitise the Annual School Census and provide comprehensive information on schools, learners, teachers and education infrastructure.
Adebajo added that the Public DNEMIS Portal will make selected official education data accessible to government agencies, researchers, development partners, civil society organisations, journalists and members of the public, promoting transparency and accountability.
The Coordinator of the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure, Abubakar Isah, said the platform would replace isolated education data systems with a unified national framework, improve data quality and strengthen coordination among education institutions.
On his part, UNICEF Education Specialist for Planning, Monitoring, Data and Research, Saka Ibraheem, reaffirmed the organisation’s support for the initiative, describing reliable data as the backbone of effective education planning.
He expressed confidence that DNEMIS would improve transparency, accountability and the quality of education statistics available to policymakers and development partners, ultimately contributing to better learning outcomes for Nigerian children.
