In a statement issued by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, LASEMA said its Tiger Squad was immediately deployed after receiving reports of the gas leak in the early hours of Friday.
On arrival, emergency responders discovered an LPG tanker with registration number MUS-289YH, carrying about 5 tonnes of gas, leaking its contents onto the road.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the leak developed unexpectedly from the underside of the moving tanker.
According to the agency, the driver’s quick action in pulling the vehicle over to a safe location helped prevent what could have resulted in a devastating fire or explosion.
LASEMA said it worked alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to cordon off the area, divert traffic and ensure public safety.

Emergency teams also carried out continuous water blanketing of the tanker and surrounding area to suppress gas vapour, minimise the risk of ignition and maintain a safe environment while repairs were underway.
The agency disclosed that a certified technician was deployed to repair the faulty section of the tanker and fully contain the leakage.
Although the situation was brought under control without casualties, emergency personnel remained at the scene to enforce safety measures until the tanker was certified safe for movement and recovery operations completed.
Reacting to the incident, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and avoid smoking, open flames or any activity capable of igniting the leaked gas near the affected area.
He also advised tanker operators and drivers of articulated vehicles to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to safety standards to prevent similar incidents on Lagos roads.
The gas leak is one of the latest emergency incidents handled by LASEMA as the agency continues to strengthen rapid response efforts across the state.
