- Tinubu will attend the UN General Assembly
- He will lead Nigeria’s delegation in New York
- Border security will be a key focus
President Bola Tinubu will personally lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled to take place in New York, United States, in September.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed this on Wednesday after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Ibrahim, Tinubu confirmed his attendance at the annual gathering of world leaders, marking his return to the global forum after missing the previous two sessions.
“The President has given us his commitment. He will attend the UN General Assembly this September,” the envoy said.

Ibrahim explained that the President reviewed and approved plans for Nigeria’s participation after receiving a briefing on the country’s proposed budget for the event.
He said Tinubu is expected to participate in several high-level engagements focusing on energy, education, healthcare and hospital management during the assembly.
According to the ambassador, the visit will also provide an opportunity for the President to showcase the reforms introduced by his administration and engage with world leaders, development partners and potential investors.
Tinubu attended the 78th UN General Assembly in person but delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at the 79th and 80th sessions.
Ibrahim added that one of Nigeria’s priorities at this year’s gathering would be to seek stronger international support for improved border security across West Africa.

He described porous borders in the sub-region as a major factor contributing to terrorism, arms smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
The envoy noted that Nigeria was already collaborating with the United Nations on regional border security initiatives and would use the assembly to strengthen international cooperation in intelligence sharing and surveillance.
He also revealed that there was a possibility of a meeting between Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the event, although no formal bilateral talks had been confirmed.

According to Ibrahim, Tinubu is expected to address the General Assembly at about 10:45 a.m. New York time, where he will present Nigeria’s position on global peace and security, economic development, climate action and reforms of international institutions.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly will open on September 8, while the general debate is scheduled to hold from September 22 to 28, 2026.
The annual meeting will bring together heads of state, government officials and representatives of international organisations to deliberate on major global issues, including security, climate change, sustainable development, humanitarian challenges and international economic cooperation.
