Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, has actively intervened to stave off retaliatory unrest among transport workers following the assassination of Toba Ajiboye, also known as Toba Ijaiya, the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

The critical intervention was prompted by rising tensions and reports of local businesses shutting down early in several Lagos communities due to fears of retaliatory gang violence.
To prevent any breakdown of law and order, Commissioner Tijani convened an emergency peace meeting at the command headquarters, bringing together the executive leadership of both the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
During the security meeting, the Commissioner of Police assured the transport stakeholders that the command would conduct a thorough, unbiased, and professional investigation to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.
Ajiboye was ambushed and shot on Sunday along the Ikorodu Road axis by unidentified gunmen. Although he survived the initial attack with gunshot wounds, he tragically succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment at St. Nicholas Hospital.
To reassure the public and deter potential troublemakers, the command has increased its visibility by deploying rapid-response patrol teams to key motor parks, garages, and notorious flashpoints throughout the metropolis.
The commissioner also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and share credible intelligence with security agencies to help fast-track the arrest of the assailants.

Responding to the security measures, the Lagos State Chairman of the NURTW, Mustapha Adekunle (popularly known as Sego), praised the police command for its timely response and efforts to maintain stability since the tragic incident.
Sego, who described the late Ajiboye as a highly loyal and dependable ally, confirmed that the union has met repeatedly with its members across the state to enforce absolute compliance with the commissioner’s peace directive.
The leadership of RTEAN similarly expressed total support for the police command’s investigative efforts, promising that its members would not engage in any activities that could disrupt the state’s security.
The joint meeting resolved to issue public announcements across the transport network to ensure calm remains as the homicide department works to close the case.
