France captain Kylian Mbappé has become the FIFA World Cup’s all time leading goalscorer after finishing the 2026 tournament with a record 22 goals.

Mbappé reached the historic milestone despite France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the third place playoff, where he scored twice to take his overall World Cup tally to 22 goals in just 22 appearances.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the French forward netted 10 goals during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing a pivotal role in France’s run to the semi finals before Les Bleus eventually finished fourth.

His latest achievement sees him surpass Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who previously held the record with 21 goals from 34 World Cup appearances across six tournaments.

Former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who held the record for more than a decade with 16 goals, has now dropped to third on the all time scoring chart.

Brazil legend Ronaldo remains fourth with 15 goals in 19 World Cup matches, while Germany’s Gerd Müller and England captain Harry Kane are tied on 14 goals. France great Just Fontaine completes the top six with 13 goals, remarkably scored in just six World Cup matches.
