The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on climate services, data management and national resilience initiatives.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the agreement was reached on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Omotenioye Majekodunmi, in Abuja.

Speaking during the visit, Anosike said NiMet, as the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, provides the baseline atmospheric data required for climate trend analysis, risk assessment and reliable climate projections.
He stressed the need for both institutions to jointly develop climate projections, strengthen early warning systems, standardise climate data and undertake collaborative research to support evidence-based climate policies.
“Enhanced collaboration will provide policymakers with localised, science-based information needed to implement effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies,” Anosike said.
He added that closer cooperation would also improve the translation of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors, including agriculture, health, water resources and transportation.
The NiMet Director-General further noted that access to quality meteorological and climate data is essential for securing international climate finance, adding that both agencies could jointly pursue funding opportunities to support climate resilience, early warning systems and critical climate infrastructure.
Responding, NCCC Director-General Dr. Omotenioye Majekodunmi welcomed the NiMet delegation and commended the agency for its contributions to weather and climate services in Nigeria.
She expressed support for stronger institutional collaboration, with both organisations agreeing to formalise the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
According to the agencies, the MoU will promote sustained collaboration in climate services, climate data management, research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest.
The partnership is expected to combine NiMet’s technical expertise in meteorological and climate data with the NCCC’s mandate to coordinate Nigeria’s national climate policy and commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to advancing climate action, strengthening institutional collaboration and protecting lives, livelihoods and the environment through improved climate services and evidence-based decision-making.
