The Ile-Bintin Social Club marked Thanksgiving with a memorable address from Dr. Oladipupo Ajiboye, Chairman of the Interim Administration Committee, calling for unity, forgiveness, and shared responsibility among members.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the highlight of the event was Dr. Ajiboye’s reflective speech, in which he traced the origins of Thanksgiving to the early 17th century, when European settlers were welcomed by Native Americans with a communal feast, and highlighted how the holiday evolved over time to become a symbol of reconciliation and togetherness.

He explained that Thanksgiving took on a transformative national role during the American Civil War under President Abraham Lincoln, who leveraged the holiday to foster unity between the North and South amid the struggle against slavery.
Dr. Ajiboye also recalled historical opposition, noting that Thomas Jefferson initially resisted Thanksgiving as a religious observance, citing the U.S. Constitution’s separation of church and state.

Dr. Ajiboye emphasized that Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and the formal declaration of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November cemented its significance as a national holiday.
He also highlighted modern traditions, including the presidential turkey pardon, football games, parades, and the cultural prominence of Black Friday as the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season.
Linking history to the club’s future, he urged members to embrace the spirit of Thanksgiving as a moment for reflection, reconciliation, and mutual support. “Thanksgiving is a time to come together, to forgive, and to remember that we need one another more than ever,” he said, challenging members to strengthen the bonds that unite them.
The gala concluded on a celebratory note with an award presentation honoring club members who have shown unwavering dedication to the growth and progress of the Ile-Bintin Social Club.
