The new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has arrived in Oyo town to begin a 21-day traditional rites process.
The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, officially announced Oba Owoade as the new monarch of the ancient Yoruba kingdom on Friday. On Monday, January 13, 2025, the governor presented him with the staff of office.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Oba Owoade succeeds the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away three years ago.
The presentation ceremony was attended by kingmakers, known as Oyomesi, alongside top government officials and prominent personalities from the state.
Following the presentation, a source revealed to Punch that the new Alaafin was expected to be received by his subjects in Oyo town on the same day. He would then proceed with the mandatory 21 days of traditional rites required for his ascension to the throne.

The source stated, “Oba Owoade has headed to Oyo town to meet the sons and daughters of Oyo town and would proceed for his mandatory 21 days traditional rites for the ascension to the throne of his forefathers.”
This traditional process is an integral part of the ascension to the revered throne of the Alaafin, ensuring continuity with the customs and traditions of the Yoruba people.
