Anambra 2025: Labour Party Stops Governorship Primary After Court Removes Chairman

- Labour Party Suspends Anambra Governorship Primary: The planned April 5, 2025 primary election in Anambra has been put on hold indefinitely.
- Supreme Court Sacks Julius Abure: The apex court removed Julius Abure as Labour Party national chairman and ordered all his executives to vacate their positions nationwide.
- New Leadership Takes Over: Only executives loyal to the newly recognized leader, Senator Nenadi Usman, can conduct valid party activities moving forward.
The Labour Party has cancelled its plan to hold the governorship primary election in Anambra State, which was supposed to happen on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
The cancellation comes after an important decision by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which removed Julius Abure from his position as the National Chairman of the party.

According to the ruling delivered on Friday afternoon, the Supreme Court ordered that Julius Abure and all his executive members at the national, state, and local levels must immediately vacate their positions and leave all party offices.
The court recognized Senator Nenadi Usman as the legitimate head of the Labour Party.
Because of this development, the Anambra governorship primary cannot go ahead as planned.
The acting chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, Comrade Peter Okoye, said that any primary election conducted under the leadership of the now-sacked Julius Abure would not be accepted by the law or the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He explained that only those executives loyal to the new national leadership led by Senator Usman are legally allowed to organize party activities, including primary elections. Holding any election now would be against the court ruling and could lead to the disqualification of the party’s candidate in the future.
Peter Okoye also revealed that he has scheduled a meeting with members of the acting state executive committee on Saturday.
The goal of the meeting is to find a new way forward and to prepare a proper report that will be sent to the new national leadership for guidance and approval.
He encouraged all Labour Party members, supporters, and aspirants in Anambra State to remain calm and patient. He reminded them that the party is still strong and remains the fastest-growing political party in Nigeria.
According to him, Anambra State is one of the party’s major strongholds, and these temporary issues will soon be resolved.
Comrade Okoye promised that the party would return with a fresh plan and new date for the governorship primary once all necessary steps have been taken in line with the law and the decision of the Supreme Court. He also urged everyone to be watchful, stay united, and wait for official information from the newly recognized national leaders.
