EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a public notice released on Monday and dated August 14, 2026, the Council said any university that admits students into an unapproved Law programme could face sanctions, as such admission would violate the regulations governing legal education in Nigeria.
The notice, signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho, also warned prospective students, parents and guardians to verify the accreditation status of any university before enrolling for a Law degree.
The Council stated that only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws programme, adding that students who enrol in unapproved Law programmes would not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.
“The Council of Legal Education hereby informs the general public, prospective students, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders that only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria.
“Furthermore, students admitted into Law programmes in universities that are not accredited by the Council of Legal Education will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School,” the notice stated.
The Council explained that the published list was provided to guide the public and was valid as of August 2026, adding that it would be updated when necessary in line with its statutory responsibility to regulate legal education in Nigeria.
The list also identified universities currently under a moratorium on admission, meaning the institutions are not permitted to admit new students into their LL.B programmes during the periods approved by the Council’s governing body.
Baze University, Abuja, is under a three year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 academic sessions, while Lead City University, Ibadan, has a five year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2027/2028 sessions.
The Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, is also under a two year moratorium covering the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
