- Atiku describes Kanu’s detention as a stain on justice.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has thrown his weight behind calls for the immediate release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his extradition from Kenya in 2021 under the Buhari administration.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Atiku’s statement comes after African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore challenged political figures from the South East, including Atiku, Peter Obi, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, to march to Aso Rock to demand Kanu’s release.
Sowore, in a recent post, urged leaders from the region to move beyond “empty noise” and actively pursue justice for the detained IPOB leader.
Reacting on Thursday through his verified social media platforms, Atiku urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to respect court rulings and release Kanu without further delay.
“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open sore on our nation’s conscience and a stain on our belief in the rule of law,” Atiku stated. “Defying court orders that granted him bail is an abuse of power and an assault on justice.”
He further declared his full support for Sowore’s campaign, stressing that the prolonged detention of Kanu reflects badly on Nigeria’s democracy and judicial integrity.
“I lend my voice in full support of the campaign led by Yele Sowore for his immediate release or due prosecution. We fail as patriots if we allow Kanu’s case to fester as yet another wound this nation refuses to heal,” Atiku added.
