Eko Hot Blog reports that African Union (AU) has suspended Gabon after a military coup overthrew President Ali Bongo Ondimba on Wednesday. The coup leaders have announced that they will install Gen. Brice Nguema as the transitional president of the country.

The AU’s Peace and Security Council met on Thursday to discuss the situation in Gabon and decided to suspend the country’s participation in all AU activities and institutions. The council also called on the coup leaders to release Bongo and his family members and to ensure a peaceful transition back to civilian rule.

The coup in Gabon has been condemned by the United States, the European Union, and other countries. The US State Department has said that it remains “strongly opposed to military seizures or unconstitutional transfers of power” in Gabon. The EU has called for restraint from all parties in the crisis and for a peaceful resolution to the situation.
