Oyemara, who was an usher and head of the electrical unit at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Okhoro, reportedly got trapped while attempting to salvage property from the burning house.
Other occupants managed to escape, but several of them sustained injuries.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Edo State, Moses Yamu, said: “One 60-year-old, Etebet Oyemara, lost his life in the fire,” adding that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze.

According to witnesses, it took the joint intervention of officials of the Edo State Fire Service and Guinness Nigeria Plc to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings.
A Mass was held on Monday in memory of Oyemara, as preparations are being made to convey his remains to his hometown in eastern Nigeria. Survivors and neighbours have appealed to the state government and well-meaning Nigerians for support.
