- Bill passed to rename Benue State University as Moses Orshio Adasu University
- Law signed by Governor Hyacinth Alia in December 2024 formalizing the renaming
- Notice issued for all official documents and departments to use the new name
The Benue State House of Assembly has formally renamed Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, to Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University (MOAUM) in honor of its founder, following the passage and signing of relevant legislation.
According to Eko Hot Blog, many in Benue view the name change as both symbolic and deliberate, meant to immortalise the memory of Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu’s contributions to the founding and development of the university.

The renaming law was passed by the Benue State House of Assembly on 31 December 2024 and then signed into law by Governor Reverend Father Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who is Visitor to the University. From 30 December 2024, the change became legally binding. Under the law, all official documents, correspondence, and communication must now reflect the new name, Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi.

University management issued a memorandum informing principal officers, deans, directors, and heads of department about the implementation of the renaming law. Staff have been instructed to use the new name immediately in all formal and legal capacities.
Some opposition and critique have surfaced from students, alumni, and members of the public. Concerns include the length and religious tone of the new name, fears of losing institutional identity, and arguments that public consultation was insufficient.
Supporters counter that the change is a fitting tribute to Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu, marking the legacy of one of the university’s founders and early visionaries. They say the renaming does not affect academic operations or programmes but underscores the historic roots of the institution.
This renaming follows earlier legislative action, including bills to rename BSU and to establish the Benue State University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area.
