Mama Mammy Ochefu, wife of the late military administrator, Col. Anthony Aboki Ochefu, and the visionary behind the famous Mammy Market found in military barracks across Nigeria, has passed away.
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that she died on Wednesday at 84 age.
She hailed from Jericho-Ugboju in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Her legacy dates back to 1955 when, as a young bride married to then-Non-Commissioned Officer Anthony Ochefu, she sought a means to keep herself engaged and support her family.
Living in the Abakpa Army Barracks in Enugu, she started a small business selling soft drinks and kunu (a local grain drink) to soldiers.
Her initiative quickly gained popularity, and military authorities later formalized her idea into what is now known as Mammy Market—an essential marketplace within barracks where soldiers and their families can purchase food, drinks, and essential goods.
Over the decades, Mammy Markets have become a vital part of military and paramilitary institutions across Nigeria, serving as a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit.
Details about her burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
